MUFF 9 - FRIDAY, MAY 23, 2014

MICROCINEMA [   ÊTRE] (6029A ave. du Parc)

Life's Work: Experimental Docs

7:00 p.m. | 61 min

A series of docu-portraitures. An amateur filmmaker derives his work from an intensely local sense of an Arkansas community. A young African-American "pioneer" interacts with an urban landscape that may be a « dead end .» An unconventional "queer portrait" photographer discusses his interest in plants, gay porn, and erotic overeating. Abandoned mental institutions, ethereal domestic chefs, and the nostalgic observations of sailors from the Port of Montreal round out this impressive collection of docu-shorts.

Programmers: Bradley Colbourne, Kris Woofter

Outside In

8:30 p.m. | 55 min

A program of films that explore the many connotations of the term, « architectural, » from an emphasis on the texture and surface of celluloid, to the filmic framing of certain aspects of buildings, to the idea of narrative itself as a restructuring of experience. Films like Black Rectangle, Against the Grain, and Head, Tail, Rail almost beg to be touched, and films like H2T and Lost Leaders combine intricate sound experiments with striking visuals. The experiments here extend to include both impressionistic, alternative history in Diaspora Ethiopia and a « myopic » exploration of space in Bettina Hoffmann's Myopia.

Programmer: Bradley Colbourne

A Certain Slant of Light:
Uncanny Works

10:00 p.m. | 60 min

These works evoke the quiet terror of the everyday. The distanciating, eerie sounds and oppressive claustrophobia of Eva Létourneau's Entre chien et loup give way to the shifting frames, seemingly manipulated by an unseen hand, in Paul Hinson's If These Were Silent. Caroline Monnet's Gephyrophobia and Albert Alcoz's Triple Exposure are almost manic in their subjective reconfigurations of the real. And in the final three films, landscapes and spaces suggest disturbing, revelatory potential. The works in this program depict a world framed by uncertainty and anxiety.

Midnight Dread

11:30 p.m. | 50 min

The midnight program offers up MUFF's most dread-filled mix of underground and experimental horror shorts. The works presented pulsate with the most visceral experiences of corporeality and synesthesia. This year our programme builds dread like a snake slowly coiling around its prey, featuring images of transmogrifying bodies, abject matter, uncanny spaces, and nightmarish mask-play.
